Powell, Thomas (1816-1896)

Early years

Thomas was born on 21 December 1816 at Hereford. He was converted in 1833 when PM missionaries visited Hereford.

Ministry

His obituary records that on his stations Thomas realised great success in building chapels, raising money and saving men.

He was blessed with a fine and commanding presence, a firm and practical mind. His preaching was Evangelical, instructive and interesting. His superintendency was marked by great earnestness, painstaking method, perfect mastery of detail, impartial treatment of men, and abiding loyalty to the connexion.

Family

Thomas married Lydia Timbery, nee Lewis (1826-1876) on 11 February 1850 at Downhead, Somerset. Lydia was the widow of George Timbery, a PM minister. Census returns identify two children.

  • Mary Eliza (1859-1921) – married Thomas Harry Wiggins, a shipping agent. (Note: appears as Mary Jane after her marriage.)
  • William James Lewis (1863-1957) – a dairy farmer (known as Lewis)

Thomas married Mary Ann Toogood (1824-1892), a widow from Glastonbury in 1878.

Thomas died on 29 July 1896 at Southampton, Hampshire.

  • I am the last surviving great grand son of nine great grand children and have found additional information. 

    Thomas was baptised on 8/1/1817 at St Nicholas Church, Hereford. Married Lydia Lewis the only daughter of William and Sarah Lewis of Downhead, Somerset. Date not known and registration of marriage not found. 

    1850 William James Lewis (1) born Cranborne, Dorset 1853 William died Newbury, Berkshire age three years.

    1858 Mary Eliza born Malmesbury, Wiltshire. 

    1863 William James Lewis (2) born Motcombe, Dorset 1873 Joseph Toogood the husband of Mary Ann dies. 

    1876 Lydia Powell dies at Motcombe, Dorset 

    1878 Thomas marries Mary Ann Toogood at Swindon. 

    1879 Mary Eliza marries James Baker Toogood and Mary Jane Toogood marries Thomas Harry Wiggins at a double ceremony at Swindon conducted by Rev Thomas Powell, father of Mary Eliza and step-father of Mary Jane
