Juggins, William (1825-1882)

Primitive Methodist Magazine 1872

Early years

William was born on 27 February 1825 at Luton, Bedfordshire to parents Jonathan Juggins and Elizabeth Fensome. He was baptised on 11 November 1827 at St Mary, Luton.  As a child he attended a Baptist Sunday School.

William was converted aged 14, when Primitive Methodist missionaries visited his mother’s home. He soon became a local preacher.

The 1841 census records his occupation as a bleacher, probably in the hat trade.

Ministry

At the age of 17, William accepted a call to ministry from the Chippenham circuit. He applied for superannuation in 1879 due to a throat affliction that severely impaired his delivery.

Family

William married Esther Cook (1829-1869) in 1849. Census returns identify three children.

  • Thomas Gamby (1856-1922) – a general labourer and caretaker
  • Bessie Jane (1858-1934) – married John Sheppard, a PM Minister
  • Kate Annie (1866-1951) – married George Henry Baston, manager of metal chain works in 1901

William married Ann Daniel (1843-1910) in the summer of 1870 at Bromyard, Herefordshire. Census returns identify two children.
