Garner, John Kemp (1823-1915)

Primitive Methodist Magazine 1877

John was born on 11 September 1823 at Patrington, Yorkshire to parents John Garner and Mary Kemp. He  was converted, aged 16, through the ministry of William Clowes.

Ministry

The PM magazine of 1877 records; ‘His sermons, which are carefully prepared, contain a plain and lucid statement of evangelical truth, and are eminently adapted to convert sinners and edifying saints.’

Antliff records that John was still working as an active PM Minister when Methodist Union took place in Canada in 1883.

Family

John married Mary Alice Flesher (1828-1860) in 1848 and they emigrated to Canada. Census returns identify two children.

  • Mary Jane (1856-1936) – married William A Rodwell, a Methodist Minister
  • Eleazer William (1859-1940) – a farmer

John married Mary Camplin (b1832) on 10 September 1861 at Scarborough Township, Ontario. Census returns identify two children.

  • John N Garner (1862-1903)
  • James Camplin (b1868) – a farmer

James married Elizabeth Ann Stewart (1837-1907) on 1 January 1876 in the Peel District of Toronto, Ontario. Census returns identify one child.

  • Laucinda (b1882)

John died on 23 March 1915 at Walkerton, Ontario, Canada.
