Cephas Alexander Maynard

Born in Stoke Newington in 1896, Cephas Maynard, a pupil at Elmfield College (1909-12), was killed in action on 20 July 1916. 

At the outbreak of the 1st World War in 1914, Maynard joined the 20th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (London Regiment), which was formed in Epsom by the Public Schools and University Men’s Force.  In November 1915 his battalion landed in France, where he was one of the many casualties of the Battle of the Somme, during the attack on High Wood.

His family were Primitive Methodists, and they set up the ‘Cephas Maynard’ scholarship in his memory, ‘by which a fatherless or orphan boy, from one of our Orphan Homes can be sent to Elmfield College or some similar institution for two or three years, and, in the event of his showing exceptional ability, he may go forward to the university.’
