Pope, Henry (1805-1887)

Primitive Methodist Magazine 1850

Henry was born on 11 October 1805 at Giffydam, Leicestershire to parents Ralph Pope and Elizabeth Martin. He was baptised on 29 October 1805 at Worthington, Leicestershire. He lived his early years on his father’s farm. Henry was converted on 22 February 1823 at the Wesleyan Chapel at Griffydam, but immediately joined the Primitive Methodists at Worthington.

On day when the appointed preacher failed to arrive Henry was asked to fill in. This led to Henry going on the plan in June 1823.

Ministry

His obituary includes these words. ‘As a preacher he excelled, but he did not seek to adapt his preaching to the mere tastes and whims of the people. He sought to win them for Christ, by preaching Him to them as their only means of deliverance from sin and death and reconciliation with God.’

Family

Henry married Elizabeth Stevens (1787-1852).

He married Serena Seargeant Board (1809-1884) on 2 November 1853.

Henry died on 26 December 1887 at Bath.

  • Henry Pope was the brother of my 3rd great grandfather.  Consequently I’m very interested in him.
