Smith, Charles (1815-1895)
Early years
Charles was born on 25 April 1815 at Upton cum Kexby, Lincolnshire, to parents Charles and Charlotte. He was baptised at Upton cum Kexby on 7 May 1815. As a child, he moved to Willoughton, near Scotter. His father was a blacksmith and Charles learned the same trade. Charles was converted in 1832, aged 17, and immediately started to seek development of his mental culture and scriptural learning. After a few months he became a local preacher.
Ministry
Charles was Secretary of the General Committee from 1874 to 1879.
In retirement, Charles was Secretary to the Connexional Fire Insurance Co. until 1894.
His obituary records that he was always ready for a merry and innocent laugh, and loved dearly to hear and rehearse a humorous story. Though he regarded himself for many years as only a ‘plain preacher’, yet his preaching was always acceptable, and eminently profitable to those who desired ‘ the sincere milk’ and the ‘strong meat’ of the Divine word.
Family
Charles married Sarah Shepherd (1816-1892) in 1841 at Caister. Records indentify four children.
- Sarah Ann Charlotte (b1848)
- Eliza Jane (b1853)
- Charles Albert (b1855) – a chemist
- Mary Louisa (1858-1861)
He married Catherine Hesp in 1893 at York.
Charles died on 21 March 1895 at York, Yorkshire.
