Early years

John was born on 3 September 1805 at Manchester, Lancashire, to parents Jospeh and Ann. When he was an infant the family relocated to Witton-le-Wear, Co Durham. John was converted on 12 May 1822 through the preaching of Francis Jersey.

Ministry

His obituary records that membership increased by 860 on his stations.

‘He was an ardent and successful labourer, a meek, kind and judicious paster, an affectionate husband, a loving father and a warm hearted friend.’

Family

He married Ann Proctor (1806-1901) on 28 June 1836 at St Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire. Census returns identify six children.

  • Ann Elizabeth (1837-1909) – a dressmaker
  • Mary (b1839) – a dressmaker
  • Joseph (1844-1933) – a dealer in confectionary
  • Sarah Jane (1847-1828) – a tailoress
  • Martha (1849-1926) – married Edwin Hales, a packer
  • George Proctor (1853-1894) – a bookbinder

John died on 24 February 1872 in Huddersfield.
