Ravensmoor: Return from the Primitive Methodist chapel in the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious Worship
transcribed by David Tonks

The Ravensmoor Primitive Methodist chapel in Keith Guyler’s photograph opened in 1878 and closed about 1965.  When Keith Guyler took this photograph in 1997 it was Edleston Farm Cottage.

However, the Return to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious Worship identifies an earlier chapel, built in 1833. The return was completed by John Taylor, the steward.

On visiting to photograph Ravensmoor Primitive Methodist Chapel in 2023 it was noted that a row of cottages (possibly, once four) were within six to eight feet from one side wall of the Chapel. The brick work is the same as with the Chapel. Were these cottages built at the same time to help with the finances of the Society if the chapel did not flourish at Ravensmoor, as often happened in the Primitive Methodist Connexion, when chapel building.

The fourth and fifth photograph of the cottage(s) are by kind permission of Adam and Andrew.

The above contribution and photographs are by Elaine and Richard Pearce.
