Pursell, Thomas (1779-1837)

Thomas Pursell was born in 1779, at Weston Turville, near Aylesbury, Bucks: but after a time removed to Moreton near Thame in Oxfordshire, and lived without real religion, but was attentive to the means of grace.  When we opened Thame mission in 1837, he came to hear.  There was then much evil speaking; but he calmly advised people to hear for themselves.

On Sunday July 7, 1837, we held a Camp meeting in Mr. Joseph Way’s field at Moreton.  In our first going out in praying companies, a mighty divine influence rested on the Camp.  We made a ring for the mourners, and seven or eight came in to he prayed for, and the Lord set them at liberty.  Bro. Pursell said he never felt so much in all his life.  I invited him to become a member, and he did so, and continued to the end of his life.

On Monday, October 23, he attended a missionary meeting in a barn at Moreton, and was very happy in the Lord.  The next day, going out with his master’s team, the waggon wheel accidentally passed over him.  He was taken to Thame, and continued till the Monday following, when his happy spirit took its flight to the paradise of God, aged 58 years.

He was much respected, and his sudden death has produced good effects.  I improved his death to a weeping audience, from Rev. xiv. 13.

W. Peacefull
