Dando, Gilmore (1896-1962)

Gilmore Dando, the son of a coal miner, was born and lived at Coalpit Heath, Frampton Cotterell, near Bristol.  In 1917 he married Eveline Allsopp, and after the war worked as a boot repairer.

He was also a Primitive Methodist, and a conscientious objector.

His case was raised in Parliament in May 1919, along with another conscientious objector, W M Green, a 20 year old Bristol miner, and a Seventh Day Adventist.  Both had been refused exemption from military service as conscientious objectors, and when forcibly conscripted into the Gloucestershire Regiment, had refused to obey military orders. Green had been court martialled three times and was serving a two year sentence with hard labour in Bristol Prison.  Gilmore Dando had been court martialled for the second time in January 1919, and was also in Horfield Prison, Bristol.

Dando was finally released from Horfield Prison, Bristol, on 16 June 1919.
