Phillipson, James Emerson (1879-1936)
Early years
James was born on 19 March 1879 at Todmorden, Yorkshire to parents John Phillipson and Sarah Helen Jepson. John was a PM Minister. James was baptised on 1 June 1879 at Walsden, Yorkshire by Rev Samuel Russell Woodhall.
Ministry
His obituary records that James gained the affection and respect of all his people in the six circuits in which he travelled. He was a judicious administrator and a great pastor, ever ready to respond to the call of sickness and need, generous to a fault, kindly, considerate.
Though himself suffering, he went through a terrible gale to see a dying friend, and paid the penalty by a sudden collapse.
Family
James married Emma Wolstenholme (1875-1921) in the summer of 1907 at Burnley, Lancashire. Records identify two children.
- John (b1910) see photo above
- Harold Brown (1914-1992)
James died on 11 January 1936 at Morecambe, Lancashire.

- 1907 Ramsey, IoM
- 1912 Buckley
- 1916 Preston Brook
- 1924 Fleetwood
- 1933 Morecambe

James Emerson Phillipson was my Grandfather’s (George Emerson Phillipson) brother.
I have in my possession a Mantel clock which is inscribed to the Reverend Phillipson in 1924. I would be happy to be in touch with any member of his family to reunite the clock with them without charge. Thanks, Peter S.
This page was modified on 27 February 2016 to add a transcription of a sketch in the Christian Messenger 1921.
We have another family journal. I am so excited to see this website and have sent you an email. My grandmother was Sarah’s only daughter. She was given a copy of the journal, she is alive and well and will be thrilled to see that other Household Annuals survived! Please publish something by Sarah so we can show her daughter her words.
Thank you so much for this 🙂 John (junior) was my grandpa and my mum’s dad – she is so excited. It’s wonderful to see this x
The Phillipson family kept the most wonderful ‘Household Annuals’ every year. Englesea Brook Museum has four, for the years 1911, 1915, 1916 and 1918. These were recently donated by John Anderson, who found them in a second hand bookshop in Hanley several years ago. We will be transcribing and publishing extracts from the ‘Annuals’ on this website, so look out for more! So far there are pages by James’s brothers Sydney, Dryden and Harold, his sister Nellie, and father John senior (also a Primitive Methodist Minister). I do hope some more of these amazing journals have survived and are still waiting to be discovered as they give a fascinating glimpse into the life of a Primitive Methodist family.
