Primitive Methodist chapels

I have identified the following Primitive Methodist chapels in the earlier counties of Denbighshire and Flintshire. There may be some I have missed. Some of those listed have vanished and I have not been able to find any photo or drawing of them. I would be grateful for information about any of the ones below, or about any I have missed. They were all English-speaking societies, though there was a short-lived Welsh mission mounted by the Oswestry circuit. Golly, Llay, Wrexham, Ffrwd, Moss, Caergwrle, Rhostyllen, Rhosddu, Rhosnesni, Rossett, Connah’s Quay, Ewloe, Commonwood, Mold (Padeswood Road), Mold (Chester Street), Alltami, New Brighton, Drury Lane, Penyffordd, Broughton, Kinnerton, Queensferry (Zion), Sandycroft, Saltney, Rhosymedre, Rhosllanerchrugog, Ruabon, Copperas, Fron (Richard Jones memorial, 1914; original became a school canteen), Black Park (= Halton), Chirk (Station Avenue), Pontyblew, Overton, Cloy, Talwrn Green, Knolton, Bettisfield, Penley, Bronington, Caer Estyn, Coedpoeth.

  • Thank you Christopher.
    Vowchurch indeed in Herefordshire, the text copied in the Builder magazine has found [apart from £, etc.] yet a bit of a puzzlement.

    Listed in a Herefordshire Archive Service catalogue is CWM Primitive Methodist 1828-1837. It has the ref. X70/1.

  • Thanks for the extract from The Builder Raymond. I’m pretty sure that, despite the mention of Flintshire, it does relate to Vowchurch in Herefordshire because:

    1. I can find no Vowchurch in Flintshire and
    2. the Cwm circuit was based on a farmhouse in the parish of Clodock, also in Herefordshire

    I*’ve added the comment to the Vowchurch pages as well as here to see if anyone can clarify.

  • The following is not the Vowchurch PM Chapel in Herefordshire .
    The Builder, vol. 21, issue 1074, page 643, Sept., 5th., 1863 :
    Vowchurch ( Flintshire ).- A new Primitive Methodist Chapel has been opened at Vowchurch* in the Cwn circuit. The edifice is of brick and an unprentending structure. Its total cost was about [£]190 (?). This is the third Chapel the people of the Cwn circuit have opened in twelve months.
    …………………..
    * but located where.

  • Knolton and Bettisfield chapels are still operating in the Shropshire and the Marches Circuit.

    Chirk (Station Avenue) closed in 1971. The congregation join with the congregation of Chirk Green Methodist Church to form Chirk Methodist Church. There are still a number of people attending Chirk Methodist Church who previously belonged to the Station Avenue Church.

  • The Padeswood Road chapel (listed as Mold) is the former Tabernacle PM Chapel, Padeswood Road, Buckley, now known as Buckley Cross Methodist and housed in the former Sunday School building opposite the site of the original chapel. I will endeavour to submit a web page as there is quite a lot of information and a photograph of the old chapel contained in the 1857-1956 Buckley Sunday School Centenary Jubilee booklet.

    I also have information on Broughton PM Chapel as my father compiled the 1980 Centenary Booklet which contains photographs including one of my great grandmother, Ellen Davies, with her Sunday School class, taken around 1914. The chapel closed a few years ago and now lies dormant and boarded up on a main thoroughfare between Chester and Mold. I will forward more detailed information on Broughton shortly.

    Some information on Alltami and New Brighton chapels is shown on Bryn Chapel page on this site, also Drury Lane Chapel under Buckley.
