Early years

Richard was born on 14 May 1827 at Stinsford, Dorset to parents John and Mary. He was baptised on 10 June 1827 at Stinsford. His father, John was a shepherd and Richard worked as an agricultural labourer before entering the ministry.

Richard was converted on 2 March 1846 and commenced his ministry on 28 April 1851. He arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on 12 August 1852 on his way to take up his post in Canada.

Family

Richard married Mary Anne Samways (1822-1878) in 1855 at Bowmanville, Ontario. Census returns identify three children.

  • Samways (1857-1918) – a hardware retailer
  • Sabina (b1861) – married Joseph Pugh, a bricklayer
  • John Jubilee (1863-1872)

John married Lilly Ann Gordon (1836-1918) on 5 Mar 1879 at Wellington, Ontario.
