Early Life

James was born on 3 May 1815 at Barwell, nr Leicester, Leicestershire. His father was a farmer and member of the Established Church; however, he was sufficiently broadminded to allow the pioneers of Primitive Methodism to preach in his barn. James was converted about 1836.

Family

James married Elizabeth Wilson (1823-1896) in the summer of 1851 in the Basford Registration District, Nottinghamshire. Census returns identify three children.

  • Harriet Wilson (1853-1932) – married Jeremiah Sharp White, a PM Minister
  • Hannah Rebecca (1854-1938) – married William Barker, a PM Minister
  • Frederic Wilson (1857-1935) – a milk seller (1911)

His obituary records that James lost his sight in 1902, but it was restored following an operation some four years later. James died on 30 September 1907 in Manchester, Lancashire.
