Yattendon Primitive Methodist chapel

Reading circuit

The Primitive Methodist magazine contains an account by E.Bishop of the opening of “a substantial, comfortable and sufficiently commodious chapel” at Yattendon on 28th and 29th September 1851.

There was a rise in chapel atendance in the area and there was concern that when winter came villagers would not walk the two or three miles to the neighbouring chapel at Quick’s Green.  It was not an easy matter to solve, but Mr Isaac Nullis of Ashampstead  ”engaged, at the risk of sacrificing some property and friendship,” to provide a chapel – which he did at a fair rent.

Preachers at the “overflowing” opening services were John Fuller of Newbury and Mrs E.Deacon.

I can’t find the chapel on the Ordnance Survey 1:2,500 map of 1877 but in 1899 a Primitive Methodist chapel appears on Chapel Lane, just west of the junction with Church Lane.  It was in the grounds of Bee Villa. Was this the 1851 chapel or a later one? It was still there in 1972 but then disappears and there is no evidence of it on Google Street View in April 2011.
