Early years

William was born on 5 June 1820 at Brompton, Yorkshire. His parents attended the parish church and his father was a bell-ringer. William’s father was attracted to the Primitive Methodists and eventually joined the Brompton society.

William was converted on 23 May 1834 at Brompton and three years later went on the plan as an exhorter.

Ministry

William’s obituary records a net increase of 834 on his stations.

Family

William married Hannah Margaret Hicks (1818-1876) in 1848 at Scarborough, Yorkshire. Census returns identify five children.

  • Margaret Ann (1849-1897) – married George Pick, a shoe manufacturer
  • Rebecca (1850-1931) – a dressmaker
  • Eleanor (b1852) – married Arthur Wellesley Warner
  • Emma (b1854) – a milliner
  • John William (1858-1832) – carpenter and sign writer, later a book-keeper

William died on 19 March 1903 at Derby.
