Jacques, William (1885-1972)

Christian Messenger 1920

Obituary

WILLIAM JACQUES: born in 1886 at Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham, was trained for the Primitive Methodist Ministry at Hartley College. After ministering in the Mansfield and Huddersfield circuits, he became an army chaplain and served in Macedonia and South Russia. He returned home to serve Hull, Normanton, Newcastle upon Tyne (Central), North Shields, and Allendale circuits. He was a fine sportsman, excelling in soccer and cricket. All his ministry he delighted in the company of young people, and always with a concern for the old. This was evident in his preaching and pastoral care. He had a capacity for friendship and was an excellent colleague. On his retirement, he returned to Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, where he began his ministry. His quiet but confident faith and encouragement to younger ministers have been of great value. After a short illness he died in hospital on 1st April 1972 in the eighty-seventh year of his life and the sixtieth year of his ministry.
