Walter Hancock was a ‘devoted member’ of Mow Cop Primitive Methodist Church, and belonged to the Sunday School.

In the First World War he served as a Sergeant in the 8th Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment.

He was just 20 when he was wounded in action, and died of his wounds on 14 September 1918.

He was buried in the British Military Cemetery at Lapugnoy.
