It is with deepest regret we record the death of Mr. Thomas Jeffery, of Osmaston Road, Derby. When quite a youth he was converted to God, and uniting with the Church of his choice, remained connected with Traffic-street Society in unbroken fellowship until his translation to the higher service. Of humble parentage, he succeeded by dint of consecrated perseverance in gaining an excellent position of trust. For many years he was agent in Derby for the Midland Railway Company, and by his faithful, conscientious service, he commanded the high esteem of his employers, and secured the good-will and respect of the town. He was passionately fond of the young. This was practically shown by the interest he took in them, obtaining situations for many who are now filling most onerous positions in the railway and commercial world. For 40 years he successfully superintended the Traffic-street Sunday school, and for a long period was leader of two society classes. He also served the Connexion as Circuit Steward, Trustee, Member of District Meeting and Conference, &c. The disease which terminated his earthly life was lingering in its nature. For over two years he suffered much under it, and then bowed to its power. Previous to his departure he gave many evidences of his readiness for death, and of his willingness to depart and be with Christ. His last words were:- ‘Come quickly, Lord Jesus,’ and shortly after, on May 31st, 1899, he peacefully entered into rest. The interment took place at the old Cemetery, Derby, on June 3rd, 1899. A solemn service was held in Traffic-street Chapel, after which a very large company followed to the grave, the officiating ministers being Revs. J.T. Gooderidge and G.T. Fawcett. The residue of his estate, amounting to £240 1s. 7d., according to the wish of the deceased, was sent to the Connexional Orphanage Treasurer for the benefit of that Institution.
