There’s an account by D Tuton in the 1866 Primitive Methodist magazine of the foundation stone laying at Summit Primitive Methodist chapel. The society had met and run a Sunday school for 30 years “in a room fitted out for the purpose”. The new chapel was designed to hold 300 with a schoolroom underneath for 300. It would cost £700.
The foundation stone was laid by Miss Bottomly (Ramsden Wood). Speakers included Rev J Graham, Rev J Macpherson, John Titlow, J Crompton, EA Davies, J Travis, J Hall and D Tuton.
The chapel was located at the junction of Holt Street and Todmorden Road.
There’s an early Twentieth Century view on this page.

I’ve added an additional document showing the research carried out by Chris Wells into the history of this chapel, together with a location map.
I have added David Tonks’ transcription of the return from the Primitive Methodist preaching place in Summit to the 1851 Census of Places of Public Religious worship. It was completed by the Sunday School superintendent , John Howarth.
I’ve added some detail on the foundation stone laying from the Primitive Methodist magazine
On Wednesday 17th Sept I was stood outside the chapel at Summit debating whether to take a picture, I couldn’t get a good angle so I left it. It is uploaded the same day, what are the odds on that!
