Staxton Primitive Methodist chapel

Main Street, Staxton, SCARBOROUGH, YO12 4SY

Staxton Primitive Methodist chapel was opened in 1847 according to the date stone over the door.   It is built in red brick in Flemish bond, with a slate roof. The opening on December 12th is recorded in the Primitive Methodist magazine  by J Cheeseman. There is further detail there.

On Google Street View in March 2009 it is disused and boarded up.

Thanks to Pat Donnor (2023) for additional information and the photographs:

In the 1940s Methodist Statistical Returns, Staxton was described as brick built, with pews seating 80 persons and  1 other room.  It was in the Filey circuit and the Hull District.

On Google maps, March 2009, it is boarded up and disused.  In December 2022, when these photos were taken by Pat, the old Primitive Methodist Chapel is still boarded up and the roof needs repairing otherwise the building will collapse.  Very sad to see.  A new house has been built very close behind the old Chapel – in Chapel Close !

The date stone is still legible and the steps still lead up to the front door.
At the back, which can be seen from across a field, there are at least 3 windows .
