Stamforth (Stainforth?) Primitive Methodist chapel

The re-opening of a Primitive Methodist chapel at Stamforth is recorded in the Primitive Methodist magazine in a report by Stephen R Gibbons. The chapel was to meet the needs of the growing congregations, but they could only make it 25 seats bigger because of a nearby house (owned by the society).

Although the chapel already carried a debt of £119 and enlargement cost £19, it had been nearly all raised by the time of the opening.

The occasion was marked by celebration services and tea for 130. The preacher was Rev Tongue (Driffield).

The slight problem is that there is no place called Stamforth anywhere near Doncaster that I can find. The most likely candidate is Stainforth, about 7 miles north east of Doncaster and the village centred around Hatfield Main colliery. It’s a simple transcription error to misread a handwritten “in” as an “m”.

On Ordnance Survey 1:2,500 maps from 1893 until 1967, the Primitive Methodist and later Methodist chapel is labelled on the north side of Silver Street. By 1983 the building is still shown, but not labelled. On Street View in 2009, the area has been redeveloped.
