Southampton Northam Primitive Methodist chapel

Union Road, Northam, Southampton SO14 0PT

Keith Guyler’s notes say that the original chapel on this site was opened in 1872 or possibly 1875.  It was demolished and replaced by the new building in 1928 – but see the comments below for more information.

Northam was a relatively poor area around the docks.  Click here to see an interesting insight into how it was affected by the Titanic disaster.

It is still active as Northam Methodist Church.

  • The original chapel was not demolished in 1928, as Keith Guyler’s notes say. It survived until July 1941, when it was damaged in an air raid and had to be demolished.
What was demolished in 1928 were neighbouring cottages in order to build Sunday School premises.

  • I have added a short history of this chapel supplied by Vicky Green. The church closed at the end of 2019, with the last service held on 22 December 2019.
