Silkstone Primitive Methodist Chapel, Yorkshire

Barnsley Circuit

‘Our chapel (at Silkstone) was opened September 14, 1823. To God be all the glory.  After this the Lord put it into our hearts to begin a Sunday School.  We found many difficulties: but on June 27, 1824, we began with about ten scholars.  And now, thanks be to God, we have upwards of sixty; and the Lord has raised us up fourteen teachers.’

John Mitchell, Jan 19, 1825

The three photographs of Silkstone Primitive Methodist Chapel show the Chapel, called ‘Bethel’ which was built in 1877. This Chapel was to remain open from 1877 until 1954 when it closed for worship. Sometime later it was sold to a T. Horsfield , rose grower and nurseryman.

In 2020 the building is in a poor state of repair with broken windows a leaking roof and unkempt grounds.

During its time as a Chapel it was in three Circuits:–                                                                   Barnsley Primitive Methodist Circuit  1824-1892,                                                                                       Barnsley First Primitive Methodist Circuit   1892-1934,                                                          Barnsley West Methodist Circuit  1934-1954.                                                                                        (the above information by kind permission of Barnsley Archives and Local Studies)
