Procter, Sarah (nee Price) (1826-1906)

Transcription of Obituary in the Christian Messenger

MRS. SARAH PROCTOR. – Our departed sister was born at Aston, in the parish of Kingsland, Herefordshire, in the year 1826, her maiden name being Sarah Price. She was blessed with a pious mother, and was early taken to the House of God. They were a family of eight, and when very young often held religious meetings. At that early age she had a strong desire for God, but it was not until the age of twenty that she fully decided for the Lord. At that time she was living at Lyddia Bank and was attendant at the Wyson Primitive Methodist Chapel in the Ludlow Circuit. In the year 1852 she married Mr. Robert Proctor. They had eight children, and it is herself that has written this one fact concerning them, “I am so glad to see most of them in the service of the Lord.” She was a member of the Orleton Common Society for over half a century, and this Church has found in her one of its greatest supporters in all its different branches of Christian service. She helped in a practical manner such philanthropic institutions as the Sunday School Missionary Society, the Whitechapel Mission, Dr. Barnado’s Homes and many others. Her kind hospitality was shared by ministers and local preachers alike for fifty years, and her counsel and prayer will be not only a loss to the Church, but to the world, for in her prayers and pleadings none would be left out for whom Christ had died. Her end came suddenly. On April 9th she had a slight fall, and all she said afterwards was, “The Lord has come to take me home.” Her funeral sermon was preached by the writer, who has been a personal friend of the family for forty years. Large numbers attended the burial service, which was conducted by the Circuit minister, and an address was given by Alderman B. Weale, Mayor of Ludlow. Out of eighty years of her life sixty were devoted to the Christ she loved, and to the Church Militant for the Church Triumphant. May we serve and love as she did is the prayer of the writer.

G. PARTINGTON.
