Millington, Sarah (nee Wheeldon) (1808-1898)

Transcription of Obituary In the Primitive Methodist Magazine by F.E. Heape

HEAVEN seems to become richer and earth poorer bv the departure of blessed luminous saints. Our Sister Sarah Millington, of Monyash, Buxton Circuit, was translated to glory on Friday, September 30, 1898. Village Methodism has been a powerful factor in Christ’s Kingdom. Sarah gave her heart to God seventy-two years ago, joined the little society, and walked with God to heaven. She was converted at Youlgreave before we had a chapel, when our people worshipped God in a chamber over a stable. Her talents and piety were soon recognised, and she was put on the plan and successfully sustained her important office until after her marriage, when domestic duties compelled her to retire from the plan. Her married life was spent at Monyash, where for many years she was a splendid chapel-keeper. She was a grand specimen of a true Christian. The house of God was a sweet, sacred place to her. She never neglected the means of grace, and the class meeting was found specially helpful to her spiritual life, for she wished to grow and become a flourishing palm and a tall cedar in God’s Kingdom. In her later years her fellowship with the saints was hindered by deafness, but she was always an inspiration to the preacher and the people. A few months before she passed away she said, “I shall not be old when I get up yonder.” She was very fond of the old preachers, the old songs, and the old kind of unction and glory, and frequently sang the chorus, “Hallelujah, send the glory.” She enjoyed a real conscious, satisfying Christianity. A little while before she died she said, “I have been with Joshua (her glorified husband) all night, and I wanted to go into heaven with him, but he said I must stay here just a little longer.” The day of translation soon came, and she sang, “Jesus, Lover of my soul,” and peacefully passed away to glory.

An “In Memoriam.” service, conducted in the chapel by Brother J.W. Yates, was a crowded, precious season. May the relatives be sustained and follow her to heaven.
