Early years

Samuel was born 0n 20 June 1867 at Elland, Yorkshire, to parents Sidney and Mary Ann. Sidney was a miner. Samuel (Sam) was baptised on 28 May 1871 at Elland.

Samuel made his public profession of faith at the age of eighteen. He threw himself into Sunday school work and soon became a local preacher. He was recommended for ministry by the Sowerby Bridge and Greetland circuit.

Ministry

Samuel served for five years as District C.E. Secretary and also served as District Missionary Committee Secretary.

Samuel’s obituary records that he was a forceful and effective preacher, eager to win verdicts for his Lord, and an ever welcome and helpful visitor in the homes of our people.

In superannuation, Samuel continued ceaseless in service and did much valued work in the Sheffield North circuit.

Family

Samuel married Elizabeth Heppenstall (1866-1940) in the summer of 1896 at Barnsley, Yorkshire. Elizabeth was a sister of Rev Richard Heppenstall. Census returns identify two children.

  • Ruby Erica (1897-1959) – married Frank Turner in 1923
  • Sidney Heppenstall (1900-1993) – a bank accountant (1943)

Samuel died on 1 August 1943 at Sheffield, Yorkshire.
