Willaston Primitive Methodist Chapel, Nantwich

The Chapel used to stand in Wistaston Road almost opposite Coppice Road

Willaston Primitive Methodist Chapel was probably built in 1875 and was used for worship until 1962 when it closed. The Society then moved to join with the Society at St. Stephen’s Methodist Church in Gainsborough Road Crewe. The Chapel had seating for 230 persons. The Chapel was demolished in 1963, to be replaced at some time with a number of modern houses.

  • I’m delighted to be able to add to the page a temperance pledge from Willaston Band of Hope – cancelled because Jas. Darlington failed to keep to the pledge he made in February 1893. He was 25 years old at the time.

The pledge is in the Englesea Brook Collection. Thanks to Andrew Lamberton for flagging it up.

  • While checking recent comments yesterday I was delighted to discover this page about Willaston PM Chapel, Nantwich.

My grandfather Rev. Alexander McDonald was stationed at the Crewe II circuit from 1912 to 1915 and lived in Coppice Road so I feel sure this must have been ‘his’ chapel at the time. Also, his daughter Muriel (my Mum) was baptised there in 1913……the baptism was performed by her maternal grandfather Rev. Thomas J. Watson.

So sad to read that the chapel no longer stands but at least I’ve now been able to see photos of it. Thankyou!

  • The Petty book is a Primitive Methodist classic John. There are two Willaston in Cheshire, each with their own Primitive Methodist societies and chapels. I suspect the 1889 date on the bookplate relates to the stone laying of the chapel in the other Willaston, which is in the Wirral, rather than this one which is in Nantwich. The stone laying there happened in 1889.

  • I have just come into possession of a copy of “The History of the Primitive Methodist Connexion from its origin to the conference of 1880” by John Petty, it contains an inscription in the front saying that it was presented to William Poulson esq J. P. on the occasion of his laying of a memorial stone of the Primitive Methodist chapel, Willaston on the 17th of September 1889.
Thus suggesting that the chapel was built at this time.
