PRIMITIVE METHODISM has ever been rich in the character of its women. The subject of this sketch is just one example of the splendid types of womanhood by which our Church has been so nobly served. Mrs. Rudge is an esteemed member of our South Bank Church, and for a long period it has been enriched by her invaluable gifts and generosity of spirit. In May, 1869, she received her first class ticket and holds an unbroken record of membership and service. Earnest and energetic in all good works she is still one of the most ardent workers in the Church. Whatever she takes in hand is done thoroughly, and she possesses the genius for making things go. Her faith and labours are truly wonderful.

She is the Treasurer of the C.E. Society, which, during the past year raised no less than twenty pounds in Class monies. She is Secretary of the Sisterhood, a comparatively young Institution, but full of vigour and promise. Then she is a Missionary enthusiast, and holds the office of Secretary of the Women’s Missionary Auxiliary, and in connection with this splendid work has proved herself a most efficient organiser. As a worker in the Free Church Canteen for the Soldiers and Sailors, she has done admirable work, and by her constant kindness and care has done much to help brighten the stay of our brave guests. Space forbids to tell of all her splendid devotion of faith. Despite the difficulties and bereavements that have crossed her path and shadowed her home she has kept a firm faith and a bright outlook. We wish for her yet many more years of joyous service. W. TURNER.

Family and other information

The subject of this sketch was probably Sarah Rudge, nee Warren. She was born in 1855 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire to parents George, a schoolteacher, and Sarah.

Sarah worked as a teacher of sewing and needlework.

She married William Henry Rudge (1850-1881) in late 1876 in the Middlesbrough Registration District, Yorkshire. Census returns identify one child.

Sarah died on 27 October 1928 at South Bank, Yorkshire.
