Metheringham Heath Primitive Methodist Chapel, Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire Archives, Lincoln, has the following information about this chapel:

The former chapel was known as Metheringham Heath Chapel though it actually lay just within Dunston parish, standing right at the boundary of the three parishes of Metheringham, Dunston and Coleby. It had a Sunday School and was in the Lincoln Circuit from around 1882-1927.

Metheringham Heath PM Chapel is listed at Lincolnshire Archives as a Chapel. However, I can only locate PM Sunday School records. There is a remote possibility this was a PM Sunday School for the Metheringham PM Chapel nearer the village. The Heath is more rural though and farming families needed to be nearer a school and/or chapel.

Note: There are quite a few former PM Chapels that today might seem to be too remote for a large congregation, but many of the PM Chapels in rural area were attended by the farming community.

In Cumberworth (in Lincolnshire) although land was purchased by the PM Connexion to build a PM Chapel it was the farming families that donated the bricks freely to build it.

  • Lincolnshire Archives re Metheringham Heath:

On a One-Inch 1899 O.S. Map (Lincoln sub section) for the Metheringham Heath location that the L-Archives cites for a PM Chapel, this O.S. Map just states School and quite rural then.

    Kind regards,

    Ray.
