Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

The Brightside Society in the SheffieId III. Circuit has lost one of its most useful and promising young men by the sudden death of Mr. Leonard H. Palmer, the only son of Mr. John and Mrs. Palmer. Both Mr. and Mrs. Palmer became acquainted with our church in their village home in Norfolk. About the time of their marriage they removed to Brightside, and united with our church. Here Leonard was born twenty-two years ago. When quite young he was taken to the Sunday school in which his father is a devoted worker. Nine years ago when Leonard was thirteen years of age – during a special evangelistic mission – he decided for Christ, and joined the C.E. Society, in which he continued a member until his death. In due time” he was raised from the young men’s class to the Teachers’ Roll, and being possessed of good musical gifts, was appointed organist to the Band of Hope and Sunday school, and about five years ago became also organist to the Church, where he rendered valuable and efficient service up to the last Sabbath he spent on earth. He was a kind and an affectionate son, a real joy to his parents and his sister. Deeply interested in the Church, he endeavoured to promote all her interests; was regular and punctual as a Sunday school teacher and organist, and seldom absent from the week-day services. He endeared himself to all the ministers by the readiness with which he undertook any work for the Church, and the uniform kindness he manifested towards them. Though of a somewhat quiet and retiring disposition, he was a pleasant and interesting companion, and took an intelligent interest in all Church life and work. Numerous testimonies have been given of the respect and esteem in which he was regarded by his employers and the officials and members of the Church and the Circuit. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Palmer in the great loss they have suffered. May the Divine Father graciously sustain and comfort them until the “day break and the shadows flee away.”

Family and other information

Leonard was born abt 1890 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, to parents John and Fanny. John was an Assurance Agent with the Prudential.

The 1911 census return identifies Leonard as a mercantile clerk.

Leonard’s death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1912 at Sheffield, Yorkshire.
