Winter, John George (1892-1918)

Died as a Conscientious Objector

John George Winter, a coal miner and Primitive Methodist, was born in 1892, and lived in Lanchester, County Durham. He was a talented member of his local amateur football club.

As a Conscientious Objector, he was sent to Wormwood Scrubs Prison, London, where he died of pneumonia, on 13 July 1918,

His name is recorded on a wooden plaque made in 1923 giving the names of 70 British WW1 COs known to have died as a result of their treatment, which is now held in the Peace Pledge Union office.

  • Is there any information about where he is buried? I am doing some research on the transport by train of the coffins of people who died in the Great War and this man may have been repatriated to County Durham. Henry Firth, also mentioned on the website was repatriated by train, initially via Plymouth.
