Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

JANE CLARKE of Distington. – Jane Clarke a devout Christian, and a loyal Primitive Methodist, was the daughter of George and Catherine Hull, in the Bedale Circuit. Converted in her youth, she became an active Christian worker, and delighted in accompanying her father to his preaching appointments in that extensive country Circuit; and subsequently in the Darlington and Gainsborough Circuits.

Married to Francis Clarke, they resided for a time at Saltburn, and afterwards at South Shields, Woodhouse Carr, Leeds, and Distington in the Workington Circuit.

Rev. J.E. Carmichael, who knew her intimately for many years says, “She was a good woman, her intelligence and kindness above the average, and her constant aim was to live at peace with all.” Her home was the abode of peace, and her family rose up to call her blessed.

Her last illness was a long and painful experience, but her calm and peaceful countenance proclaimed to all how strong was her trust in God. On Friday, September 4th, her release came, and she quietly passed away to be with Christ. Devout men carried her to her burial, followed by a large number of mourners and friends.

“Until the day breaks, and the shadows flee away.”
