Hazelbury Bryan Primitive Methodist chapel

Partway, Hazelbury Bryan Sturminster Newton Dorset DT10 2DP

Hazelbury Bryan is west of Blandford Forum. Hazelbury Bryan Primitive Methodist chapel is dated by Keith Guyler in the notes accompanying his photograph as 1847 and 1863.

The return to the Census of Places of Public Religious worship in 1851 for the chapel was completed by the minister, Isaac Hedges and confirms the 1847 date. The return shows the chapel full to capacity on both Sunday afternoon and evening, with additional scholars attending the Sunday school.

The 1861 census says that the parish had a population of 761 people – slightly fewer than now.

It is still in use and has been updated – chairs replacing pews to enable a more flexible use.

  • The use of the quotation was all to do with having to build one of the walls from the outside in (rather than the other way around) as the landowner on one side would not allow the builders to put ladders and equipment on their land.

An earlier chapel was at Kingston in Hazelbury Bryan and used from around 1845 until 1863 when this one was built.

  • The stone above the door is clearly 1863 so presumably there was an earlier chapel on this or some other site. I wonder what stories of local hardship are concealed by the quotation from 2 Corinthians !!
