Harrison, Harry (1905-1961)

Transcription of Obituary in Minutes of Methodist Conference

Born at Raunds in Northamptonshire in 1905. During his very early life his parents moved to Manchester, and his formative years were spent in the fellowship of the Great Western Street Church there.

He was accepted for the Primitive Methodist Ministry, and after two years at Hartley College he entered upon his life’s work in 1930.

He served in the following circuits : Cambridge, Ipswich, Great Yarmouth, Beccles, Norwich, Loughborough, Leicester, Great Yarmouth for a second time, and Northampton. Before going to the newly formed Northampton Circuit he had spent himself upon the building of a new church at Gorleston-on-Sea.

Whimsically calling the work at Northampton a kind of holiday, he threw himself into it wholeheartedly.

He died within twelve months of his going there, but the impression he made will last for many years.

His ministry was largely inspired by a deep sympathy with people, which issued in the giving of deep comfort and rich companionship. Deliberate in thought and slow in speech, and carefully avoiding the very shadow of anything that might wound or distress, he nevertheless firmly upheld whatever seemed to him to be right and wise.

He never shrank from stooping to humble tasks, and an innumerable company of people bless the remembrance of him as a preacher and pastor who was deeply beloved.

His last illness was brief. He died on 31 July 1961 at the age of fifty-six and in the thirty-second year of his ministry.
