Grimoldby and Manby Primitive Methodist chapel

Old Chapel House, the former Grimoldby Primitive Methodist chapel
Peter Bates 2018

Getting a Primitive Methodist chapel at Grimoldby and Manby in the Louth circuit took a long time. A site was eventually obtained between the two villages and a new chapel opened on September 28th  1853. It will seat about 130 and cost £150 of which £55 had been raised. Particular donations came from Mr Ellerby and family, Mr & Mrs Byron, and Mr & Mrs Maltby. Details are given in the Primitive Methodist magazine by Hugh Campbell

The chapel is marked on Ordnance Survey maps at the junction of Tinkle Street with Priory Lane. It is named on the 1951 map but by 1956 although the building is still there, the name has disappeared. Given that in Priory Lane there is Old Chapel House, it is likely it has been converted into a house.

  • Thanks to Peter Bates for sending a photograph of the former chapel, in its current guise of Old Chapel House. Peter also tells us:
    “We moved here last April from Norfolk, so I am not sure if any descendants are still around locally, I will make enquiries.
    There are 10 names on the Deed and are as follows;
    John Bett, William Byron, Thomas Ellerby, Richard Ellerby, William Ashton, James Robinson, Christopher Larder, John Maltby, Henry Horner and John Allison.

    I hope in the near future to remove some of the render to the south elevation, where I believe the original entrance door was located, and try to find the stone plaque above, if still there”

  • Thanks for your update Peter. A photo would be most welcome: please send it to info@myprimitivemethodists.org.uk. It would also be interesting to know the names of those who signed the Deed of Indenture. Wonder if any of the names still exist in families in the village?

  • After the Chapel closed in 1933, it was used as a agricultural grain sack store for many years and became almost derelict until eventually being converted to a private house. The previous occupants after the conversion was firstly a Mr & Mrs Coppins, (interred at St Ediths Church Grimoldby) recently Mr & Mrs Smith resided here, and since April 2018 Revd Oddy-Bates and Mr Bates have taken ownership of the property and have taken residence. On the hall wall within the house is the glazed and framed original completed Deed of Indenture, signed and witnessed and date stamped 8-12-52. Recent photograph of the property is available upon request.
