Hather, George Fred (1867-1948)

Primitive Methodist Magazine 1908

Transcription of Magazine ‘Sketch’

Mr. George F. Hather has been the Circuit Steward of the Doncaster First Station for over eight years. He is a kind and most genial gentleman, and he has won the hearts of his brethren by his kindness and courtesy. A gentleman was asked a few days ago, “What is the principle trait in Brother Hather’s character?” and the reply was, “He delights to serve and oblige.” He has a large family and knows something of the afflictions and sorrows of life. But amid the stress of a large business, and the cares of family life, he has served the Doncaster First Circuit faithfully and well.

When the Circuit was required to toil and self-sacrifice he has given himself to the work most cheerfully; and his brethren praise him for his work’s sake. He is a sound Methodist, and we pray that his life may be long spared to serve the church of his choice.

  • Susan,

I have not identified any further information about the Hather family in the Primitive Methodist Magazine index of obituaries prepared by William Leary. If I come across anything in other publications I will let you know.

You might find further information about the family church life in the local archive. Records associated with particular Methodist churches and circuits should be lodged there, it they still exist.

  • I’ve just read this article about George F Hather with interest as he was my great grandfather Lee Hather’s brother. He sounds a gentleman. He looks like my gr grandfather too.Do you have any other articles about the Hather family particularly George Hather their father? He was  the manager of Haxey Endowed School for many years before his death in 1923.He and his wife Mary were members of the United Methodist Chapel Graizelound.I am tracing their tree and would be grateful for anything connected to them.
