Banks, George (1846-1901)

Transcription of Obituary in the Christian Messenger

MR. GEORGE BANKS, brother-in-law of the Revs. George Newman and Richard Wycherley, and uncle of the Rev. Newman Wycherley, died at Stafford on June 27th, 1901, in his fifty-sixth year. He was the son of Primitive Methodist parentage. All through life he was closely connected with the Stafford Church, and as a trustee he watched its growing prosperity. In his earliest days he was a scholar in the Sabbath school, and for many years he was a consistent member of society. Mr. Banks was a regular attendant at the public services, and was deeply attached to the House of God. For some considerable time before his decease he had been a great sufferer from asthma, which was borne with exemplary patience. His end came unexpectedly, but sudden death to him meant sudden glory. His remains were interred by the Rev. Albert A. Birchenough in the Stafford Cemetery in the presence of many weeping friends. Mr. Banks has left a widow and family of sons and daughters, who are deeply interested in the welfare of Zion.

George was born in 1846 at Stafford, Staffordshire, to parents William and Ann. William was a shoemaker.

George worked as a clicker in the boot and shoe trade.

George married Elizabeth Newman (1849-1909) in the spring of 1870 at Stafford, Staffordshire. Census returns identify seven children.
