Carter, Cuthbert Simpson (1840-1899)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

CUTHBERT SIMPSON CARTER was the son of honest industrious parents, and was born in the year 1841. The first twenty-six years of his life were lived after the course of this world. When about twenty-five years of age he began to attend the services of our chapel, Copley Lane, St. Helens Auckland Station, and under the ministry of the Rev. John Worsnop, was brought to Christ. Breaking with his early associates, and giving up ungodly practices, he at once identified himself with our Society, and became an active, thoughtful, earnest worker. He was an excellent Sabbath School Teacher, apt, lucid, and effective, loved by the scholars, and respected by the teachers; he was frequently elected Superintendent, the duties of which office he always discharged with credit to himself, and benefit to the school. For the last twenty years he has honourably sustained the office of class leader, and by his wise judicious council and consistent Christian life has helped to form the character of those who were brought into fellowship with him. After a complicated but brief illness he departed this life on the 7th of February, 1899, leaving his wife and family and the church of his choice to mourn his loss, but we ‘Sorrow not as those without hope.‘ ‘He is not lost, but gone before.‘
