Cayton Primitive Methodist chapel served what was then a farming community, although it is now predominantly residential housing with large numbers of retired people and others employed in the area.

Although Keith Guyler labelled the photograph on this page as Cayton Primitive Methodist Chapel, thanks to Pat Donnor for pointing out that it is really a photo of Cayton Wesleyan Chapel which was built in 1821 on Main Street.

The Primitive Methodist Chapel was on Chapel Lane, built in 1822.  The 1940s Methodist Statistical Returns for Cayton Primitive Methodist Chapel states that it was stone built with seating for 80 on pews.  It was in the Filey Circuit in the Hull district.  Pat dates its closure after the 1940s and the building has been destroyed.

Mr Guyler dates it as closing in the 1950s.

The Wesleyan chapel is the only case I know of where the chapel became a fish and chip shop after closure (recommended on Trip Advisor), although it is also a hairdressers.  Previously it was a blacksmiths.
