Billinghay Primitive Methodist chapels

West Street (1851), High Street (1912)

The first Billinghay chapel in West Street dates from 1851. It closed in 1912 and at the time of Keith Guyler’s photograph in 1995 was a store. It is little changed on Google Street View in 2009, although it does retain its date tablet.

The replacement chapel in the High Street dates from 1912. It served until 1996. In 2009 it is called The Old Chapel and is in residential use.

  • The Donington PM Circuit Preachers Plans for this first PM Chapel on West Street, Billinghay, may or should mention names and dates of some Preachers visits.

There are some at The Museum, Broad St., Spalding (C/O, The Hon. Secretary, Spalding Gentleman’s Society).

The West Street PM Chapel later would have come within the Sleaford PM Circuit and there are a few Primitive Methodist Preaching Plans from 1893 to c.1911 (before other PM Chapel was built).

    Lincolnshire Archives, Lincoln:

Ref. Meth/B/Sleaford P/H/1/9: Preaching Plan for Sleaford PM Circuit, year 1893.

Ref. Meth/B/Sleaford P/H//10?: Preaching Plan for Sleaford PM Circuit, 1904-1905.

    Ref. Meth/B/Sleaford P/H/11: Preaching Plan, 1911.

(When Billinghay West Street PM Chapel was previously within the Donington PM Circuit, it would have been from c.1850/1 to 1861, Sleaford from 1861/2 to 1932, then the unification of various Methodists groups, yet some later).

Ref. MLI82920: Billinghay PM Chapel,West Street. Some Photographs of the exterior, including date plaque.

Ref. Meth/C/Billinghay/1?/D/2/1: Certificate of Registration of Place of Worship, year 1853 (updated, or realised one had to be obtained?).

Ref. Meth/C/Billinghay, High St./D/2/2: Letter of Re-Registration of a Place of Worship, 1912 (this is for the other PM Chapel built).

Ref. Meth/B/Sleaford/Circuit Baptism Register 1850-1865. A need to find the correct ref. for this. (It may include some baptisms in the Billinghay PM Chapel, or people went to the Sleaford Circuit Chapel for a baptism).

Ref. Meth/C/Billinghay, High St./D/3/1:  Letter Re-Registration for Solemnising of Marriages, year 1912  (This is for the other PM Chapel built. However, it is an indication that the previous PM Chapel on West Street was solemnised for marriages, be there any taking place or not).

Ref. Meth/B/Sleaford/A/1/3: Circuit Account Book, from 1894.

Ref. 6-Tax/51/11: Billinghay, year 1909/10. Not sure if this would mention West St. PM Chapel, yet sometimes there are maps included.

Ref. MISC DEP 513/2: Deeds, etc., for Walcot Parish, to include Billinghay, 1787-1905.

Ref. MISC DEP 420/1/1-4: Title Deeds Billinghay, 1788-1879.

Ref. 10-Notts/1/8: Plan of Billlinghay, 1876.

    Ref. 245213: Billinghay Chronicle, c.1999-2000. Another Ref. 245219?, c.1999-2000.

Ref. 10-Notts/2/38: Another Billinghay Plan, year 1875.

    Ref. 52824: History of Billinghay.

Ref. LH/003: Billinghay (not sure what this is).

Note: I have found that some ref. numbers need checking if or when at the Archives. There are also uncatalogued documents for various denominational Lincolnshire Chapels.

There is or was a local History Group for Billinghay.

In 1864 there was a great fire yet not thought to have included West Street (sometimes called “The Back Street”). It is documented that the PM Chapel “down the back streeting catcheth fire”. If so, it was repaired/lowered/made higher or rebuilt, the eroded plaque surviving. Whatever the case, because of an increasing congregation, a larger PM Chapel would have had to be built later, the one the High Street in 1912.

  • As the newish owner of the above chapel just thought I’d introduce myself.

I am in the process of converting it into a family home and would be interested in any information anyone has on the history of the building.

The date tablet says 1850, postcode LN4 4HP.
