MISS ALICE HOLDUP, who departed this life Aug. 19th, 1899, was born in the village of World’s End, belonging to the Newbury Circuit, June 27th, 1857. When about eleven years of age she removed to London with her parents, the family, which was a large one, uniting in church fellowship with our society at Fetter Lane, Holborn, which was then the head of what at that time was known as the London Second Circuit, but which has for some time ceased to have a separate existence, owing to the lease of the chapel property having run out. The members for the most part, however, retained their membership with us by uniting with Surrey Chapel or the new chapel at King’s Cross. Miss Holdup was for many years an active member of the latter and in the last years of her earthly life a valued member of our vigorous church in Seymour Place, Marylebone. Though, owing to the delicate state of her health, never able to take a very prominent part in the active work of the church, she nevertheless for many years rendered good service in the Sabbath school as a teacher, being greatly beloved by her scholars for the kind, sisterly interest she took in all that pertained to their social and spiritual welfare. She was ever a welcome visitor at the bedside of the afflicted and suffering, to whom she was indeed a sister of mercy and comfort in her ministrations. In her last days her physical prostration and pain were exceedingly great, but she was graciously supported by her unwavering faith in the promises of God.

Family and other information

Alice was born in 1857 at World’s End, Berkshire, to parents Walter and Ann. The 1861 census describes Walter as an agricultural labourer, baker and local preacher. In 1871 he was working in London as a chaff cutter.

Alice worked as a dressmaker (1881) and later in a perfumer’s shop (1891).
