BRO. A. DAVIS, of Hindon, Motcombe Circuit, was born in 1836, and was converted and joined our Church in his twenty-third year, under the ministry of the sainted Rev. T. Kench. The following year he became a local preacher, and for forty years faithfully and acceptably fulfilled his appointments. Possessed of much fervour and homely wit he was greatly beloved throughout the circuit, and was everywhere welcomed as a preacher and temperance advocate. He loved the young, and was superintendent of the Sunday school for many years, and an enthusiastic supporter of the Christian Endeavour Movement. He was also the society steward, and was ever loyal to the quarterly meeting and the ministers. He was, too, a trustee and chapel treasurer, and led in obtaining the splendid new church and school which adorn the village. Deeply interested in the social and political progress of the people, he was a member of the parish council, the members of which bore his remains to the grave. On May 21st, he was taken ill with congestion of the brain, and on June 1st he was called up higher and entered into rest. A large number of local preachers, members, and friends attended the funeral service, which was conducted by Revs. T. Phelps, W.H. Nicholas and J.L. Williams, the chapel being crowded with sympathetic friends – ministers and all present feeling that they had lost a friend whose place it would be hard to fill. Deep sympathy is felt for his widow and children, but they have the consolation of knowing that
He is not dead; his spirit lives
With God above the skies.
To Him eternal praises gives,
For he has won the prize.
